I'm so glad that we are all 11 around here. But I have an adult question - how do you guys store all your Hot Wheels? In packaging? Loose in cases? On the desk or floor for easy hooning? I'm looking for some kind of case or something, because mine are just scattered around my apartment right now.

Most are hanging on my walls, overlapped like that with every other one hanging from a thumbtack (the ones in between stay put due to friction. I could probably make due with only hanging every third) but I have a couple massive piles scattered around because I kind of ran out of wall space. Mostly that's due to posters, though. But there is one wall that consists of only Hot Wheels, as well as half of two others.

When I was a kid, all of mine were loose for play, but when I rebuild my collection (and add those I never had before), I plan to store them in one of those big plastic Sterilite containers.

Since the ones I buy are all technically for my son, they sit in a giant plastic bin, opened, and ready for play. Something about a a vintage played with Hot Wheels is cool. Chipped paint, bent wheels, so hopefully these make it to that state.

I keep mine loose all over my desk, though I'm considering building some sort of display for them.

That looks like the way to do it if you're going to keep them in the packaging. Did you repurpose those frames?

Same here.

Every time we're at my parent's house, my son seems to sneak home one of my old Hot Wheels/Matchbox cars. We now have a van that looks like it sat outside for 10 years (probably did).

I've got a 100 car case that I got as a kid. It's got wheels and a handle like a suitcase. Looks like this one but mine has an orange "twin mill" on the front. I hope to build a display case for my die casts soon with space for my hot wheels too.

Kinja'd!!!

This is how I do it...once I get more I'll start overlapping them. They're just stuck in the wall with thumbtacks.

edit: I've already gotten about 10 more (post-picture) but not enough to start overlapping.

Yeah, I figured that would be the best idea, especially since the three cars I currently own (all 1:64 NASCAR diecast) are all still in package.

As for the collection, most shouldn't be too challenging to find, since most were First Editions models.

The most challenging one to get will be a 2003 Saturn ION Quad Coupe I used to have. It was a promotional one that I got handed out from a test drive event. I looked on eBay, and they're selling in the $60-70 range.

It's a bitch to open too! The plastic fold out "road course" that holds the cars is broken on mine. It's supposed to hold in all the cars on the left. If I open it too fast or at a bad angle, they all pour out!

I'm still debating whether or not to keep them in packaging - I rescued about 50 loose/beat up ones from my parents house last Thanksgiving, and have since added about 10 in package from eBay.

Separate storage for loose and in-package ones might be the best option.

Invest in those plastic cases they sell for storing loose cars, then a plastic tub for the in-package ones.

Sure, it would be a bit more to move around, but it's worth it for being able to find specific loose cars down the road.

I used to store my old collection in a pair of those plastic cases, plus a third one in the shape of a tractor trailer.

The trailer separated from the truck, and both had moving wheels so the rig could also be used for play.

I usually have a few on my desk and the rest in a drawer. Some of the favorite ones I tend to put on bookshelves and such, but the wife isn't a big fan of that for some reason.... can't imagine why.
